Yohimbe bark contains 1.5% alkaloids, including yohimbine, dehydrocorynantheine, ajmalicine, corynanthine, alloyohimbine and coreantheine.

Directions for use: The preparation reaches its maximum blood concentration 1–2 hours after taking it. It is therefore best taken before exercise, preferably in the morning before eating. For sexual dysfunction, it is prescribed half an hour to one hour before sexual intercourse, no later than 2 hours before bedtime.

Before taking the preparation, avoid carbohydrates such as potatoes, white bread, pasta and cakes, because insulin and the alkaloid yohimbine are antagonists and carbohydrates reduce the medicine’s effect. Fatty food does not reduce the effect; it only slows the medicine’s absorption from the stomach.

To enhance the effect of yohimbe, it may be taken with ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Vitamin C promotes the formation of a more active compound, yohimbine ascorbate. This strengthens and prolongs the fat-burning and tonic effects, improves circulation and increases energy, with effects lasting up to 4–5 hours. The effect appears 20–30 minutes after taking it; it is often used before exercise to increase fat burning. Bear in mind that this combination may cause excessive stimulation (increased blood pressure and heart rate).

The fat-burning effect is enhanced when taken with coffee, but this is only suitable for people who do not have circulation problems.

Taking yohimbe preparations with adrenomimetics, including clonidine, or with other preparations that stimulate sexual function is strictly prohibited.

Do not exceed the dosage prescribed by your doctor.

Contraindications and possible side effects: Age (under 21 or over 60), pregnancy, lactation, hypotension, hypertension, atherosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, ischaemic heart disease, increased neurotic excitability, anxiety, serious mental disorders, insomnia, glaucoma, severe liver and kidney damage, gastric ulcer disease, type I diabetes mellitus, and acute prostate diseases.

Storage conditions: Keep closed at room temperature and protect from sunlight

The most common side effects: Increased excitability, neuroticism; headaches; dizziness; worsening gastrointestinal problems, pain in the stomach area; tachycardia; orthostatic hypotension; allergy.

Prolonged use of preparations containing yohimbine and exceeding the dosage are not recommended. Yohimbine is known to lower blood pressure, which creates certain problems in patients with low blood pressure; on the other hand, it is an excellent stimulant for those unable to take medicines with similar effects because of arterial hypertension. An overdose of the medicine manifests as follows:

• Excessive salivation
• Increased breathing and heart rate
• Arterial hypertension
• Neuroticism and sleep disturbances
• Tremor

Bear in mind that yohimbine preparations suppress the action of the enzyme monoamine oxidase, hindering the elimination of various toxins from the body, such as tyramine. Therefore, if you consumed beer, cheese, smoked meat, red wine, or heart and liver products before taking the medicine, a sharp rise in blood pressure may occur.
