St. John’s Wort

Description

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) is a perennial plant with yellow flowers. Herbal preparations use dried flowering tops harvested during flowering. Its constituents include hypericin and hyperforin.

Uses and potential benefits

Traditionally used to relieve temporary mental exhaustion. Some standardised extracts have been studied for symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Results depend on the particular preparation and cannot automatically be applied to every herb or capsule product.

Topical preparations are used for minor skin inflammation and small wounds; this does not mean oral capsules are intended for topical use.

Potential harms and precautions

Possible effects include digestive upset, dizziness, restlessness, disturbed sleep and increased skin sensitivity to sunlight. St. John’s wort is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Medicine interactions

St. John’s wort can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives and other important medicines. Combining it with antidepressants increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you take anticoagulants, anticonvulsants or other medicines.

Use and pack sizes

Extract, 50 g — 35 ₾; 60 capsules — 65 ₾. Directions depend on the formulation and ingredients; agree them with a doctor or pharmacist. Do not delay medical assessment for symptoms of depression.
